Be alert about taking diabetes drugs

8:34 AM | Labels: , , , , , , | No Comment »

Would you like to become diabetes-free but have a heart ailment instead? Unless you have suicidal tendencies, or would like to “get the better” out of your insurance policy, I think with a sane mind you would not. Diabetes treatment medications Avandia (rosiglitazone) and Actos (pioglitazone) were found to have the same risks of heart attack, heart complications, and death. The study found the risks for both diabetes drugs to be approximately 4%. The new study was published in the latest issue of Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, an American Heart Association journal. Over 36,000 diabetes patients using one of the drugs took part in the study, and researchers found that 602 Avandia patients suffered from a heart attack, heart failure, or died, and 599 patients taking Actos suffered the same outcomes; 217 patients reportedly died from each drug group.
"This study provides patients and their doctors with another source of information about rosiglitazone and pioglitazone as they determine the best therapy for diabetes patients," said Debra Wertz of HealthCore, Wellpoint's research arm.

Glaxo’s once blockbuster diabetes drug Avandia, has been under constant fire for more than three years because of links to heart problems. Sen. Chuck Grassley, the Iowa Republican who has become the bane of drugmakers, and the Senate Finance Committee (of which Grassley is ranking member) have been investigating Glaxo and Avandia for over two years, and in February released dozens of internal Glaxo documents relating to those potential cardiovascular risks. The committee sent copies to the FDA.

Glaxo has always said that it’s provided all safety data to the FDA in a timely fashion and Avandia is safe when used appropriately. But FDA reviewer Robert Misbin, an expert on diabetes drugs, isn’t so sure. Misbin became very concerned about Avandia when, in late 2006, he saw data provided to the agency by Glaxo suggesting a 31% increase in heart attack risk associated with use of the drug. So the FDA shouldn’t have waited so long to alert doctors and patients about the potential risks of the drug.

The Winner of Miss Universe 2010 : Jimena Navarrete

8:26 AM | Labels: , , , , | No Comment »

A 22-year-old woman from Mexico, Jimena Navarrete won the Miss Universe 2010 pageant. Navarrete - who's been modeling since she was 15 - is Mexico's second Miss Universe. Lupita Jones of Mexico won the title in 1991. Navarrete replaces Miss Universe 2009 Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela. First runner-up was Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps, while second runner-up was Miss Australia Jesinta Campbell.

"Her triumph is a source of pride and satisfaction for all Mexicans, who see in her the fruits of perseverance," Mexican President Felipe Calderon said in a statement.

"I want the whole world to know about my country and my people," the Guadalajara native said after beating 82 competitors for global bragging rights at the pageant in Las Vegas. She donned a flowing red dress, strutted confidently in a violet bikini.

The Olympic gold-medal figure skater Evan Lysacek asked her that how she felt about unsupervised Internet use, Navarrete said the Internet is important but parents need to be careful and watch over their kids. Another question that was asked to Miss Universe was about the pageant itself. We all wonder what it is like to be in a high stress environment where there are many expectations and many conditions yet the end result means one could win big. According to Miss Universe, the biggest difficulty about the pageant had to be not enough sleep. Up early, the ladies have to get going to make sure they are ready for the day. Getting to bed later (not because of partying but because of work and excitement) they don't get as much sleep as they would have in other times.

Around the world fans from about 190 countries watching on television and keeping tabs on Twitter, Navarrete and her competitors introduced themselves while wearing over-the-top national costumes. They then danced in silver and black dresses for the show's opening number before the top 15 finalists were announced.

Jimena Navarrete won a package of prizes including an undisclosed salary, a luxury New York apartment with living expenses, a one-year scholarship to the New York Film Academy with housing after her reign, plus jewelry, clothes and shoes fit for a beauty champion.

Biography of Jimena Navarrete:

Jimena Navarrete Rosete is a Mexican model. She was born on February 22, 1988. She was crowned Nuestra Belleza Jalisco in Guadalajara, Jalisco, on July 16, 2009, and Nuestra Belleza México on September 20, 2009, in Mérida, Yucatán.Born and raised in Guadalajara, Navarrete studied nutrition prior to her participation in beauty pageants. After winning her state pageant, she competed against thirty-three other contestants in Nuestra Belleza México 2009, where she obtained first place. She is the second consecutive winner from Jalisco, following Karla Carrillo, the outgoing titleholder. Navarrete won the Miss Universe 2010 pageant, the second representative of Mexico to win the title, after Lupita Jones in 1991.

Chile miners rescue operation could take up to four months

8:07 AM | Labels: , , , , | No Comment »

Facing one of the most difficult rescue operations ever attempted, Chile is looking to space and the ocean depths for survival tips to help 33 miners endure months underground awaiting rescue. The miners have a general idea how long the rescue will take but they have not been given specific details, Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter revealed.
"I hope that nobody commits the imprudence of telling them something like this," he said.
"We have asked the families to be careful in the letters they write.

The government has also asked Nasa and Chile's submarine fleet for tips on survival in confined conditions to help ease the physical and mental pressure during the gruelling wait. Commodore Ronald von der Weth Fischer, head of Chile's Submarine Fleet, thinks the men should be told the timeline.

"It's always good to know, I'd recommend keeping communication flowing, so that they are connected to the outside world. They should hear the news, know what's going on with their
favourite soccer teams,to create a feeling of normalcy." he told Reuters from aboard a submarine in the port city of Valparaiso.Rescuers will drill a shaft wide enough to lower a cage and pull the miners out one at a time from the dusty, humid, poorly ventilated tunnels where they are trapped.

Chilean officials have been giving the advice to the miners who became trapped nearly half
a mile below the surface in a collapse on August 5 and they were found alive on Sunday, 17
days after a cave-in at a small gold and copper mine in Chile's remote north. Doctors have
recommended the miners do exercises to keep their fitness up and avoid muscle atrophy as
they wait to be extracted.

Officials are splitting the men into two shifts so one group sleeps while the other works or has leisure time. Doctors have given the men advice about how to keep their limited living space clean: Portions of a 1-meter-high (3.3 feet), 40-meter-long shaft (131 feet) are being used as a latrine. It is connected to the main 50-square-meter cabin, which is being used for sleeping, washing and praying. The men's sole lifeline to the outside world is a tube approximately 8 centimeters (3.2 inches) in diameter, through which food, water, clothing, video and radio equipment and whatever else is needed are stuffed.

Earlier, officials had said the men were adopting various roles to help them through their
ordeal. A shift leader at the San Jose copper and gold mine is fulfilling a leadership role
and another man with nursing experience is carrying out basic medical and psychological
tests.

The 33 men trapped deep in a mine in Chile since August 5 sent a video message to their
families Thursday in which they expressed thanks for the efforts under way to free them and
displayed occasional flashes of humor and patriotism."We know what you've all been doing for us," said one man. "You haven't left us alone. We want to send applause to you."
The video footage shows the men in good spirits, singing the national anthem and chanting,
"Long live Chile, and long live the miners."The men shot the video with a camera sent down
to them through a small shaft drilled to their emergency shelter in the San José mine.

Despite advances in technology and increased emphasis on safety, at least publicly, mining remains a dangerous profession. Earlier this year, 29 miners died in an explosion at the Upper Big Branch mine. Since 2000, an average of 34 people have died every year in mining accidents in Chile, with a high of 43 in 2008, according to a review of Sernageomin data.

This Time Google Offers Phone Calls via Gmail

Google has launched a new a voice calling feature that brings instant VoIP calls to the Gmail interface. At a media event at its San Francisco office, Gmail product manager Todd Jackson, Google Voice product manager Vincent Paquet, and Google communications product manager Craig Walker recounted how Gmail has grown from an e-mail client into a communications hub that supports Google Talk instant messaging, video and voice chat, and now phone calls. The service essentially works like a regular phone call. Users can click the "call phone" button at the top of their chat list and enter a contact number. Users choose their own numbers, which can be applied to 6 different devices that can be set up to all ring at the same time or not at all. Calls are free to anyone in the U.S. or Canada, and 2-cent-per- minute calls to 30 select countries. Voice mails are transcribed into text, which are then forwarded as an e-mail to users' g-mail accounts.

At present only users of the Gmail system inside the US are being offered the service. Google hopes to make money from the service by charging for international calls - though  those will vary widely, even within the same country. It has a chart of rates. People also  will be able to receive calls on their PC if they obtain a free phone number from Google,  or already have one through its Google Voice service."We’ve been testing this feature internally and have found it to be useful in a lot of situations, ranging from making a quick call to a restaurant, to placing a call when you’re in an area with bad reception," the company said on the company blog.

The service will thrust Google into direct competition with Skype, the Internet telephone
company, and with telecommunications providers. Google is also going to promote the service by setting up red phone booths in US universities and airports, letting them make free calls inside North America, and cheaper ones outside it.

The Ice Hotel of Sweden

12:18 PM | Labels: , , , , , , | No Comment »

The Ice Hotel of Sweden is an ultimate place to chill. The Hotel is situated in the Swedish Lapland town of Jukkasjarvi. It opens every year in early December and closes at the end of April. Every year in October the artists and local villagers, most from the Sami tribe in the area, begin to build the new ice hotel, which opens in mid-December. Snow canons and front loaders start by forming the snow over the steel sections that are the main structure of the Ice hotel. Sections are moved around and replaced by ice pillars put in place to give support to the snow arches. blocks of ice taken from the frozen Torne River each winter and frozen for use the following year, the Hotel at the moment is in its twentieth re-incarnation and is as impressive as ever. It began meagerly 14 years ago - one room. The 2004 season boasted 50-rooms with 5,000 square metres built of 30,000 tons of snow and 4,000 tons of ice.

Inside the Ice hotel, there is a reception area, hall of pillars, Iceart exhibition, Absolut Icebar, Ice hotel cinema and an Icechurch and of course there is a warmer option. The hotel also has cabin accommodation, a warm bar where the staff take great enjoyment in asking if you’d like ice with your drink with wry smiles all round. All water that is used in taps and bathrooms coming straight from the river Torne. Each person is given an ultra-warm sleeping bag and most people remark how "warm" they felt during the night even though the temperature is usually a steady five degrees below zero.

The Hotel also has a range of activities provided throughout the day while guests eagerly await night-fall in the hopes of catching a glimpse of those all too elusive Northern Lights. A trip by Snow Mobile is one option. After being taught to drive the equivalent of a jet-ski for on land use, the excursion follows tracks through the fir trees and along-side the frozen river before stopping for hot lingen berry juice (a local specialty), bread, cheese and smoked reindeer heart. Other activities include Hunting, Fishing, Snow driving, Horse Riding and Skiing. Most people stay at the Ice hotel for two or three nights, but you will only spend one night in the actual Ice hotel and the additional nights in the Scandinavian bungalows also on the property.
