Star Trek Re-Launches Website...

8:05 PM | Labels: , , , , , , , | No Comment »

The new, all-encompassing re-launch of StarTrek.com is upon us. The website, which went
live this morning, handles all things Starfleet and is meant to be the official online destination for Trekkies everywhere. It covers all incarnations of the venerable Roddenberry franchise, including the new movie, so even if you are among the many for whom the initials TOS mean nothing, there’s still something here for you.

In a statement on the site, the original Spock, Leonard Nimoy, confesses he finds the new website entirely logical, welcoming visitors, saying, “To those of you who have been with us
for so long, my sincere thanks for your interest. For those of you who are new to Star Trek, who are discovering it through the recent movie and are about to explore the franchise in its infinite diversity… welcome. Come aboard and enjoy.”

It’s not the flashiest-looking site, but that totally works for me. I was always more into the slight cheesiness of green body paint and William Shatner’s judo chops than the shiny surfaces and lens flares of the reboot. Plus, the databases are almost mind-meldingly comprehensive. But what do you think, PopWatchers? Like the new site? Ready to surf long and prosper?

Star Trek Online's new executive producer Daniel Stahl recently stated that he "could easily see" a hybrid free-to-play model working for Cryptic's MMO. Stahl specifically mentions (recent Warner Bros. acquisition) Turbine's Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online as "interesting plans" worth taking note of. DDO went freemium last year to create a dungeon full of gold for the developer; LotRO will roll the die for the same fate this autumn.

Stahl expressed that Turbine's model creates a "robust way to demo the game" and allows those wanting more to pay for a subscription or purchase items รก la carte. With Cryptic's parent-company Atari operating at a loss, ways to beam up revenue would appear logical. It's unclear if it's a sign of the future, but Cryptic did conduct a free-to-play away mission back in May.

'Batman 3' Shooting to begin April 2011

2:50 AM | Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , , , | No Comment »

At the London premiere of Inception, star Michael Caine revealed to Digital Spy that Christopher Nolan’s as-of-yet-untitled sequel to Batman Begins, and the $1 billion-worldwide-grossing The Dark Knight, is slated to begin production in April of 2011.

Although Nolan, his brother Jonathan, and David S. Goyer are still working on the script, an insider confirms that, although subject to change, Warner Bros. is indeed on track for an
April start date, and Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman are attached. This is great news for fans of the new Batman franchise, and finally gives some credence to all the rumors that have surrounded the third film.

So far, Nolan himself has been reluctant to talk about the future of the caped crusader. Apparently he’s very much of the mindset that, until his current film, the critically-adored Inception, opens this Friday, he’s not interested in discussing details of his future
projects. But Warner Bros. has also penciled in the next Batman for a July 20, 2012 release
date. The studio was determined to set a definitive release date this far in advance due to
the strong slate of other superhero movies to be released in the next two years.

According to Christian Blauvelt of Entertainment Weekly, Nolan confirmed this good news at
the London premiere of Inception this week. Nolan has been the director for Batman Begins
and The Dark Knight, bringing a new flare and a much darker presentation of the Batman
mythology. The films did more than present a comic book movie, and instead focused on
presenting a strong story that would appeal to many different audience demographics.
Nolan definitely succeeded with The Dark Knight, which became the second highest grossing
film of all time before Avatar passed it up this past year. The huge success that was found
in The Dark Knight led to immediate hopes that another sequel would be coming soon, and that
has led to many rumors about not just a release date, but also who would co-star in the film.

The facts that we have for Batman 3 are that production will begin in April of 2011, and that the Batman 3 release date is set for July 20, 2012. Actors Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman are all under contract to appear in the next film, and that just leaves the villains to be announced. Bruce Wayne (Bale) will need another love interest, so they could explore that in the next film. This could be where the character of Cat Woman might come back into play, but there are also several other directions that Nolan could go with this story.

UFO over Chinese Airport

10:56 PM | Labels: , , , , , , , , , , , | No Comment »

An unidentified flying object (UFO) forced Xiaoshan Airport in Hangzhou, China to cease operations on July 7. A flight crew preparing for descent first detected the object around 8:40 p.m. and notified the air traffic control department. Aviation authorities responded within minutes, grounding outbound flights and diverting inbound ones to airports in Ningbo and Wuxi.

Eighteen flights were affected. Though normal operations resumed an hour later, the incident captured the attention of the Chinese media and sparked a firestorm of speculation on the UFO's identity.
Multiple Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) sightings have recently been reported across different regions in China. They were spotted from June 30 to July 10 in the northwestern province of Xinjiang, the northeastern city of Changchun, the outheastern city of Hangzhou, and the southern city of Xiamen. People have been perplexed by UFO sightings for many years. Governments tend to be non committal about their existence, one possibility might be that they fear a mass hysteria if announced that they are real. However, independent UFO researchers
known as ufologists, are quick to say that “Yes, UFOs do exist.”
Urumqi Xinjiang : UFO Spotted

Image of UFO captured by a resident in Hangzhou Xianshan district on July 7. One recent sighting was in Urumqi, Xinjiang province, in northwestern China. At around 11:00 p.m. on June 30, a round, bright object was seen moving slowly eastward, leaving an enormous, fan-shaped trail of white light behind. A photo taken by a local resident was published in the July 5 issue of Xingjiang Metropolitan Daily.
Resident Ma Shijun was taking a nighttime stroll with his wife when he saw the object.
"I felt a beam of light over my head. Looking up, I saw a streak of bright, white light flying across the sky, so I picked up the camera and took the photo. The time was 8:26 p.m. However, whether the object was a plane, or whether it was Xiaoshan Airport's UFO, I don't have a clear answer," Ma told the Xinhua news agency.

According to Song Huagang, secretary-general of the Xinjiang Astronomical Society, the object was an intercontinental missile launched by the U.S. on June 30. "It is a hidden U.S. bomber flying toward China," one Internet user wrote on Monday. Another wrote on Sunday night, "In my opinion, the UFO is neither a U.S. missile nor a Russian satellite. Suggestions that it is extraterrestrial are even more preposterous. Everyone, use your head. This is clearly a man-made phenomenon. Would the U.S. or Russia risk provoking China's anger by firing a missile or satellite rocket in Chinese skies, without warning? I believe the Chinese military is
responsible for the UFO. It is a new missile or aircraft being tested out."

The "missile theory" was dismissed on July 9 by Wang Sichao, an astronomy researcher from the Zijinshan Astronomical Observatory (also known as Purple Mountain Observatory, under the aegis of the Chinese academy of Sciences.)Wang told China News Service that it was not a U.S. missile, because Xinjiang and California are more than 7000 km (3450 miles) apart. On viewing the video footage Wang said that the UFO seems to be "somewhat strange," given its exceptionally bright midsection and its fascinating shape.

Paul the psychic octopus

10:17 PM | Labels: , , , , , , , , | No Comment »

Paul is a British-hatched common octopus, species Octopus vulgaris. The eight-armed soothsayer which lives in a commercial entertainment aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany. The animal was used as an oracle in an attempt to predict the results of major German international football matches. He has become one of the stars of the tournament and put the TV pundits to shame, thanks to an amazing run of correct World Cup predictions.

Paul started using his nine brains to "predict" the outcome of soccer games two years ago during the European Championships. There's no crystal ball required for Paul's predictive powers. Rather each time, his handlers dip two, clear square boxes containing a mussel each into Paul's aquarium. The boxes are decorated with the either the German flag or that of the opposition. Whichever box Paul opens is deemed the likely winner.

Paul's 100% accurate predictions for the 2010 World Cup have gained him worldwide status as
a celebrity animal. Based on the Binomial Distribution in probability theory, if the prediction exercise was not biased, the probability of at least 11 correct prediction in 12
matches would be approximately 0.3%. However, the octopus chose Germany as the winning team 9 out of 12 times, which is significantly different from a 50% chance of picking each box. If the exercise was biased in favor of picking Germany, then the octopus would have a better chance at success since Germany was the favorite in each one of these matches.

Paul was hatched from an egg at the Sea Life Centre in Weymouth, Dorset, England. This octopus now lives in a tank in Sea Life Oberhausen, a commercial attraction in the town of Oberhausen, Germany. Sea Life Oberhausen is one of a chain of sealife-themed attractions
that is owned by Merlin Entertainments, a company that also owns amusement parks and midway attractions.

The name of the octopus was taken from the title of a poem by the German children's writer
Boy Lornsen: Der Tintenfisch Paul Oktopus.[10] According to statements from Sea Life's entertainment director, Daniel Fey, the octopus demonstrated his intelligence early in life:

"There was something about the way he looked at our visitors when they came close to the
tank. It was so unusual, so we tried to find out what his special talents were."

Paul the psychic octopus has become an international phenomenon after correctly
forecasting the results for all six of Germany's World Cup games.Paul will predict the World
Cup final between Holland and Spain and he will also make his prediction for the third-place
play-off match between Germany and Uruguay.
Paul's handlers will follow the now familiar routine. Two boxes will be lowered into his
tank, each containing his favourite seafood food as well as the flags of the two opposing
teams.Whichever box Paul picks food from first is adjudged the winner.Afterwards, Paul will
be offered boxes with Spain and Holland flags on the front.
However, this will only happen if he is deemed not too tired and still hungry.A spokesman
for his aquarium said. "We do not want to overburden him."

White elephant

10:43 AM | Labels: , , , , , , | No Comment »

White elephants are only nominally white - they often look dish-brown in the sun, and light pink when wet. They can look similar to other elephants except for certain features like fair eyelashes and toenails,light-colored hair or a reddish hue to the skin.

The term derives from the sacred white elephants kept by Southeast Asian monarchs in Burma, Thailand[1], Laos and Cambodia. To possess a white elephant was regarded (and is still regarded in Thailand and Burma) as a sign that the monarch reigned with justice and power, and that the kingdom was blessed with peace and prosperity. The tradition derives from tales which associate a white elephant with the birth of Buddha, as his mother was reputed to have dreamed of a white elephant presenting her with a lotus flower, a symbol of wisdom and purity, on the eve of giving birth.[2] Because the animals were considered sacred and laws protected them from labor, receiving a gift of a white elephant from a monarch was simultaneously both a blessing and a curse: a blessing because the animal was sacred and a sign of the monarch's favour, and a curse because the animal had to be retained and could not be put to much practical use, at least to offset the cost of maintaining it.The Order of the White Elephant consists of eight grades of medals issued by the government of Thailand.

'white' elephant captured in Burma

A rare white elephant has been captured in Myanmar. The female elephant was tracked down in Maungdaw in the west of the country, according to local residents.

Forestry officials found the animal Saturday, acting on a tip, in the jungles of Maungdaw township in northwestern Rakhine state, the New Light of Myanmar reported, describing the elephant as about 38 years old, 7 feet and 4 inches (2.2 meters) tall and has a circumference of 10 feet, 11 inches.

White elephants, actually albinos, have for centuries been revered in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and other Asian nations. They were normally kept and pampered by monarchs and considered a symbol of royal power and prosperity. In Thailand, all white elephants are traditionally handed over to the country's revered king."The white elephant is a sign of great blessings and fortune for the land," spokeswoman Soraida Salwala told the Associated Press news agency.

Previous white elephants transported from the jungles have been heralded in lavish ceremonies where the Myanmar's military leaders sprinkle them with scented water laced with gold, silver and precious gems.

The military regime captured three white elephants between 2000 and 2002 in Arakan State. Prime Minister Gen Khin Nyunt, who is now under house arrest, built a garden on Min Dhamma hill in Insein Township in Rangoon where the elephants were kept in a compound.Khin Nyunt presided over a ceremony for the three elephants, one male and two female. The male elephant is now 18 years old, and the two female elephants are 32, and 15.He was purged and placed under house arrest in 2005. The regime's leaders have never visited the site.

A war was fought in the 16th century between Thailand and Myanmar, then Siam and Burma respectively, over disputed ownership of four white elephants.
