A small, evangelical Christian church plans to burn copies of the Quran on church grounds to mark the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States that provoked the Afghan war. All the Muslim countries strongly condemn a Florida church’s effort to desecrate the Holy Quran on “International Burn a Quran Day” on Sept. 11. Muslims consider the Quran to be the word of God and insist it be treated with the utmost respect, along with any printed material containing its verses or the name of Allah or the Prophet Muhammad. Any intentional damage or show of disrespect to the Quran is deeply offensive.
Thousands of Indonesian Muslims rallied outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and in five other cities to protest the church's plans. The vice President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, Dr. Nasim Rehmatullah said,
“It’s regrettable that some fringe elements of the Christian faith plan to burn the Holy Quran. Such groups do not understand the true teachings of this beautiful book, which champions truth, justice and freedom of religion for all—values that Americans hold dear.”
The top U.S.commander in Afghanistan Gen. David Petraeus said,
"Images of the burning of a Quran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan
and around the world to inflame public opinion and incite violence". In 2005, 15 people died and scores were wounded in riots in Afghanistan sparked by a story in Newsweek magazine alleging interrogators at the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay placed copies of the Quran in washrooms and flushed one down the toilet to get inmates to talk.
In Pakistan, the protest demonstrations were held in various cities including the provincial metropolis against the announcement of burning the Holy Quran by American Church and the incident of making caricatures of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).Hundreds of people participated in protests and condemned the church’ announcement besides they held banners and placards carrying slogans against the US and western governments. The speakers on the occasion said that Muslims would not tolerate such shameful acts and they would not sit silent against such shocking incidents. They at the same time demanded of the government to send the shut up calls to the responsible and put ban on the products of those countries whose citizens were involved in such acts.
“This is highly irresponsible and inconsiderate statements made by Pastor Terry Jones in the USA giving rise to extremism and hatred” claimed Cardinal Oswald, Archbishop of Mumbai.
Many other churches and Christian organizations have condemned this inflammatory event that
will create disorder and hatred at a time when peace and brotherhood is needed. The very act of burning religious scripture is contrary to the teachings of the world’s major religions, including Christianity, which enjoins its followers to turn the other cheek. We have to remeber that Quran is about Jesus and Mariyam. It’s not the matter of Muslims only but for the whole world because, contrary to the prevailing perception, Quran is not only for the Muslims but for all human beings.
