At the London premiere of Inception, star Michael Caine revealed to Digital Spy that Christopher Nolan’s as-of-yet-untitled sequel to Batman Begins, and the $1 billion-worldwide-grossing The Dark Knight, is slated to begin production in April of 2011.
Although Nolan, his brother Jonathan, and David S. Goyer are still working on the script, an insider confirms that, although subject to change, Warner Bros. is indeed on track for an
April start date, and Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman are attached. This is great news for fans of the new Batman franchise, and finally gives some credence to all the rumors that have surrounded the third film.
So far, Nolan himself has been reluctant to talk about the future of the caped crusader. Apparently he’s very much of the mindset that, until his current film, the critically-adored Inception, opens this Friday, he’s not interested in discussing details of his future
projects. But Warner Bros. has also penciled in the next Batman for a July 20, 2012 release
date. The studio was determined to set a definitive release date this far in advance due to
the strong slate of other superhero movies to be released in the next two years.
According to Christian Blauvelt of Entertainment Weekly, Nolan confirmed this good news at
the London premiere of Inception this week. Nolan has been the director for Batman Begins
and The Dark Knight, bringing a new flare and a much darker presentation of the Batman
mythology. The films did more than present a comic book movie, and instead focused on
presenting a strong story that would appeal to many different audience demographics.
Nolan definitely succeeded with The Dark Knight, which became the second highest grossing
film of all time before Avatar passed it up this past year. The huge success that was found
in The Dark Knight led to immediate hopes that another sequel would be coming soon, and that
has led to many rumors about not just a release date, but also who would co-star in the film.
The facts that we have for Batman 3 are that production will begin in April of 2011, and that the Batman 3 release date is set for July 20, 2012. Actors Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, and Gary Oldman are all under contract to appear in the next film, and that just leaves the villains to be announced. Bruce Wayne (Bale) will need another love interest, so they could explore that in the next film. This could be where the character of Cat Woman might come back into play, but there are also several other directions that Nolan could go with this story.
